On the 15th and 16th of October, 2021 the Opening Workshop of the ongoing LIFE project was held with more than 60 participants, although due to the global pandemic it occurred one and a half year later than it was planned.
The first day of the event took place in the Cave Hall of Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. In the morning section, the audience could learn about the history of the project, its elements, the activities of the partners, and the results achieved so far. After lunch and a visit to the House of Venom, internationally acclaimed researchers from all over the world presented their work on snake conservation and gave exciting professional presentations, expanding participants’ knowledge of snake research and inspiring further work.
The second day was spent on a field trip, during which our foreign guests were greeted at the Hungarian Meadow Viper Conservation Center where they got an insight into the breeding technology and the radio telemetry methods used for research. We took a short trip to the habitat nearby, where besides Grass snakes (Natrix natrix), Smooth snakes (Coronella austriaca), and Eastern green lizards (Lacerta viridis), a young female specimen of a Hungarian meadow viper was also found. The day ended in one of the project areas of the Duna-Ipoly National Park near Ócsa, where we visited a reconstructed, potential future habitat of these special snakes.
